  • Arstein Tveit is a captain for the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority fleet. I met Capt. Tveit on a recent crossing to the Vineyard aboard the M/V Nantucket. Capt. Tveit has a long history with boats and the sea, having come over from Norway on a ship when he was two years old. To my delight, the captain invited me to ride up in the wheelhouse. I've been in the wheelhouses of the Islander and the Martha's Vineyard, but this was my first time in the Nantucket's. It was interesting to watch the docking of the Nantucket, which in the port of Vineyard Haven involves the turning around and backing in of this massive vessel. The pilot steps outside onto a side deck, the better to see the dock, and using specially placed remote controls, he manipulates the thrusters and propellers just so, gently easing the vessel into the slip.
  • Gerry Coleman is a purser with the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority. One day, while helping me with my bags, he said, "You're a strong woman", to which I replied, "Just like in Lake Wobegon, where the women are strong..." and he finished the sentence with me, "..the men are good looking, and the children are above average." Gerry has been to the small town in Minnesota that claims to be the model for the fictional town of Lake Wobegon.
  • Officer Jose Adams raising the morning colors at Coast Guard Station Menemsha. The flag is raised every morning at the station, ceremoniously and according to military custom, beginning with five minutes of strict silence prior to the actual raising, to honor our nation, our flag, and all servicemen. The ceremony is repeated again at sunset, when the flag is lowered and brought in for the night.
