  • The September that I was five years old my mother took me to Brickman's to buy school shoes. To her absolute horror, I chose a pair of black Keds high-tops. Neither Mr. Mello, the store clerk, or my mother could talk me out of them. "They're boys' shoes." "There are too many laces, you'll be late for school." Nice try. I was what you would call a strong-willed child, and to make a long story short, we didn't leave that store until I had my Keds. I wore black high-tops through third grade and was teased and tormented the whole way--this was many years before girls would be seen sporting pink, plaid, or purple high-tops; I amuse myself in thinking I was the first girl in the universe to wear high-tops. I loved my Keds. Many, many years passed without a thought of those sneakers. Then, one morning a few years ago, I woke up craving a pair of black high-tops, so I went back to Brickman's and bought myself a new pair - Converse All-Stars this time, size seven, and nobody tried to talk me out of them.
