July 27, 2009. During a five-hour layover in Chicago - transferring from the Lake Shore Limited to the Southwest Chief - I explored the city by foot. It was a sweltering day, oppressively hot. On my walk east from the train station, in search of the harbor, ultimately, I came upon Millenium Park, in which there are two very tall, very artsy fountains with water spilling out of the top - a gathering and cooling place for families and children; a lively summer city-scape.
