May 26, 2006 When the fisherman I exchanged morning greetings with at Jamaica Pond noticed my camera, he said, “Wait here, I have something to show you, something I made 53 years ago when I was twelve years old.” The item that C.O. Reese, aka Blackfoot Warrior, fetched from his van was this walking stick, topped with his totem, a hand-carved wooden bear; also decorated with brown rabbit fur, chicken hawk feathers, and white to represent the ermine. His birthstone, an amethyst, is imbedded in the handle. He uses the stick in his walks around his South End neighborhood. Blackfoot Warrior is a poet; his business card reads: “The Creator Guides My Pen and Passages Come Out the Other End.”
