Great house, great location.

Sara Piazza > Sheriff's Meadow wildlife sanctuary is diagonally across the street, and offers a wonderful, backwoods walk through moors and marshes to Fuller Street Beach, Edgartown Lighthouse Beach, and a loop back through town and home again.

Sara Piazza > First, we take the woods trail...

Sara Piazza > ...proceeding under the arch of high blueberry bushes...

Sara Piazza > ...which opens up to John Butler's mud hole on the left, with Eel Pond and Nantucket Sound beyond. This pond is a favorite nesting place for swans and ducks and other waterfowl.

Sara Piazza > Sheriff's Meadow Pond is on the right - we skated here as kids, and years ago, this was an ice pond. The ice house was on the far side of the pond, was insulated by bales of hay, and the blocks of ice stayed frozen all summer long.

Sara Piazza > We walk a little farther, down a shady lane, almost to the Eel Pond landing. Here we see Eel Pond at high tide, with what's left of the barrier beach nearly covered.

Sara Piazza > Eel Pond landing - about an eight-minute walk from the house.

Sara Piazza > Just beyond the landing, we turn left at this wildflower meadow...

...which opens up to John Butler's mud hole on the left, with Eel Pond and Nantucket Sound beyond. This pond is a favorite nesting place for swans and ducks and other waterfowl.
