Cambridge, April 6, 2011 : I had an hour to kill yesterday afternoon between dropping my bouzouki off in Arlington and my session at Tommy Doyle's. Not much going on in Cambridge on a Wednesday, it seems - compared to the weekends when Harvard Square is overflowing with musicians and people - but still, it is important to get out there with my camera and keep the juices flowing; an activity that has mostly eluded me of late. Brother Nathanael A few years ago, when I was new in town, I took a series of photos of a local street character named Brother Nathanael..... : A few years ago, when I was new in town, I took a series of photos of a local street character named Brother Nathanael, a/k/a Milton Kapner. Being rather naive at the time, I allowed him to post a link to my photos on his web site ("...in the Jewish neighborhood of Brookline," he exults, implying some sort of victory). Since then, I have become aware that he is an avowed anti-Zionist and Jew-hater (though he himself grew up as a Jew) whose politics and hatefulness I cannot abide (while at the same time understanding that he is suffering from mental illness), so no - there are no photos of Br. Nathanael here.

Coolidge Corner, November 19, 2009 : Paul's birthday. Bored (not that I don't have tons to do - okay, maybe it would be more accurate to say, "unable to focus on what I really should be doing.") and somewhat lonely, I roamed around Coolidge Corner today - a gray day with rain on its way - looking for ways to photograph a neighborhood I see regularly and take for granted. Without trying too hard, how to frame my world and portray it in an interesting way? What if I were trying to explain or give a virtual tour of Coolidge Corner to someone who had never seen this place? What would I like to see if I were missing Brookline? What is the difference between a snapshot and a photograph? Does any of this even matter? Anyway, here are a few reasons I love Brookline. As usual, it's only the tip of the iceberg. Looking at these, I'm thinking of a few more details I should have included. But maybe that's the process: you start somewhere.

Beacon Hill, November 18, 2009 : My mother's birthday. I made time in the afternoon for a bike ride, vaguely in search, as always, of the earth-shattering, prize-winning street photograph, but settling for a meandering stroll through Beacon Hill. Nothing earth-shattering or prize-winning going on there, but a pleasant enough walk and as good an escape as any from festering thoughts; exercise and fresh air being cheaper and certainly as good as, if not better, than therapy (learned from my mother). Loved the bricks, the lanterns, the windows and doors, the wrought iron, the close-knit neighborhood feel; the history, all in the shadow of the gold-domed state house. I am left, as usual, with the feeling that I should have taken many more photos. Maybe sometime I'll remember this at the moment rather than later.

Fenway Victory Gardens, May '09 : Just a few shots from my bike ride down to Fenway. Low-key day. The Fenway Victory Gardens are coming to life. Today, a mild spring day, I found a fair number of gardeners tending to their small plots, a few people gardening for the first time, others in long-established plots that feature rock gardens and trellises and pools. Overall, a friendly spirit; strangers speaking to one another where otherwise this would not be the case. Lovely. With cheers from Fenway Park wafting through the neighborhood. Go Sox. I returned the next day to try and capture a little more color and detail, though the light was not great - way too sunny - and was hard to get close to many of the flowers because of closed gates.

On Sunday I trekked down, via MBTA, with my camera, to take a look. The line was literally a mile long and we stood in a bitter wind for an hour and a half before reaching the ship, but it was worth it. All told, I heard that 60,000 people visited the carrier over the weekend. Chinese New Year, Boston 2/25/07 : Chinese New Year, Chinatown, Boston, February 25, 2007. The Chinese year: 4704, the year of the pig. This was my first Chinese New Year celebration. My friend Teresa Yuan told me, "It's very loud," and she was right - next time I will wear ear plugs, as I noticed the seasoned veterans were wearing. Basically, the entire neighborhood surrounding Beech Street was filled with groups, or bands, or tribes, if you will - there were the yellows, the reds, the blacks - perhaps they were families, or were members of a martial arts club - and each group, accompanied by a troupe playing very loud drums and cymbals, marched through the neighborhood, stopping at the doorsteps of shops along the way where the dragon and the lion danced, bowed, and beckoned to the shopkeeper, the movements synchronised to the pulsing beat of the music. The shopkeeper offered cabbage, or lettuce - the color green being symbolic of life, and the color of money; and oranges, orange also being a color of life - as well as a red envelope with money, these gifts offered in thanksgiving for the dragon and the lion, it is believed, having brought good luck; the Buddha figure wards off evil spirits. (At least, this is the way it was all explained to me by a seemingly in-the-know bystander.) Then, there is the loudest explosion - hundreds of small firecrackers percussing off of the streets and buildings - you have ever heard, sending people running and covering their ears (Teresa says the firecrackers are also to ward off evil spirits). In a puff of smoke, the merry band makes its way to the next shop. This ritual was repeated many times by many groups, all afternoon.

Boys on Bikes, April 2006 : Boys on Bikes About a mile from my apartment - a fifteen-minute walk - tucked away in the woods between the T tracks and the walkway along the Muddy River, is a home-made moto-cross track—an elaborate system of bumps and curves hand-dug into the earth, a secret spot where young people gather on their bikes. Legend has it that a Northeastern student dug the first bump in 1994, and it has evolved into the many-moguled, labyrinthine course that it is today. This place is magical. Even though it’s right next to the Emerald Necklace walkway, it’s hidden beneath a hill. Many people walk past it every day without even knowing it’s there. It’s cool and woodsy, and the sun glints through the leaves. Then the Green Line rumbles past, a reminder that we’re still in the city. I love this place because it reminds me of my childhood, of the days when kids roamed free, before the days of car pools and play-dates, and long before children became tethered to the modern-day baby-sitter: the cell phone. Today, a perfect May afternoon, I found Jay, Morgan, and Christine at the course. Christine is the only girl I’ve ever seen there, but she didn’t ride today because she hadn’t ridden for a while and said she wasn’t up to this course—a challenging ride with double and triple three to five foot high, very steep jumps. One can get serious air off of these babies. Jay and Morgan are engineering students from Northeastern. They come here to unwind and get their heads out of their books. Morgan, Jay, and Christine very kindly welcomed me into this magic world with my camera (10-D with 24-70 f2.8 lens). I loved it. Thanks! Update: sadly, this bike course has since been reclaimed by the owner of the land, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, who has cut down all the trees and plowed under the moguls, replacing all traces of this magical world with a large expanse of gravel.
